This Utah foundation is helping single mom’s go back to school to support their family. The foundation awards scholarships three times a year; the next found of applications is in March. Stella H. Oaks Foundation has been around since 2017. “Thirty years ago, Dr. Richard McDermott founded the Carlyle and Delta Harmon Foundation to provide scholarships for single mothers with minor children at home. By 2018, the foundation had given over 500 scholarships.
As a private foundation, the Carlyle and Delta Foundation accepted no private donations. All scholarships came from the original endowment and its earnings. This, of course, limited the number of scholarships that could be given. Dr. McDermott was determined to find a way to help even more single mothers.
That led to the founding of the Stella H. Oaks Foundation in 2017. As a 501(c)(3) public charity Stella H. Oaks Foundation allows for engaging donors from the general public to assist in this effort to help single mothers and their children out of poverty through education. Richard served as President of the Stella H. Oaks Foundation 2017-2019 and the Board of Directors through 2020.”
