To make up for time smokers take for cigarette breaks, Japanese company Piala Inc. is giving non-smoking employees six extra days of vacation.
A spokesman for the company said, "One of our non-smoking staff put a message in the company suggestion box earlier in the year saying that smoking breaks were causing problems."
Around 35% of Piala employees smoke in a country where nearly 22% of people smoke. Japan has one of the highest smoking rates in the world.
"I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion."-Takao Asuka, CEO of Piala Inc.
Is this fair?
