We recieved an email from one of our listeners who is trying to help his friend who is struggling with PSC. You can find info below on how to get involved with helping!
Hi my name is Geremy Vowles and I am organizing a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for my longtime friend John Wachtel. He has been suffering with Ulcerative Colitis for several years, he has been recently diagnosed with PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis) as well as Bile Duct Cancer. John has already undergone several procedures to remove the tumor in his Bile Duct. John has been receiving chemo and radiation treatments on a daily basis and will require a Liver Transplant as a result of the PSC disease. As you can imagine the medical expenses are overwhelming. That is where the fundraiser comes into play. John’s friends and I will be providing Spaghetti dinner with bread sticks and a green salad for a donation of $10.00. We are also selling raffle tickets during the dinner to raise additional funds on July 27th 2018. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to John to be used for his medical expenses. We are asking for raffle donations from local businesses to raise money to offset the cost of his medical expenses. Your donation of any size item or gift certificate would be greatly appreciated. Your business name will be displayed at the event as well as mentioned during the raffle. Thank you for considering a donation and helping this amazing man, husband and my friend. We just want John to focus on healing. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 435-228-8278 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Sincerely, Geremy Vowles
John’s Friend and Event Organizer What is Primary Sclerosing (skluh-ROHS-ing) Cholangitis (koh-lan-JIE-tis)? PSC is a disease of the bile ducts. Bile ducts carry the digestive liquid bile from your liver to your small intestine. In primary sclerosing cholangitis, inflammation causes scars within the bile ducts. These scars make the ducts hard and narrow and gradually cause serious liver damage. In most people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, the disease progresses slowly. It can eventually lead to liver failure, repeated infections, and tumors of the bile duct or liver. A liver transplant is the only known cure for advanced primary sclerosing cholangitis. Causes The cause of PSC is unknown but it has an association with inflammatory bowel disease, especially Ulcerative Colitis. It is thought that there may be an autoimmune component to the disease, where the body's immune system attacks the bile ducts in the liver and causes them to become, inflamed and narrowed that triggers the disease in people who are genetically predisposed to it.
