Utah Teacher Asks Student to Wash off Religious Symbol on Ash Wednesday

Bountiful, Utah - A fourth grade student, William McLeod, was asked by his teacher to wash off the ash cross he received to commemorate Ash Wednesday.

“A lot of students asked me what it is. I said, ‘I’m Catholic. It’s the first day of Lent. It's Ash Wednesday,’” William said. His teacher asked him about it and when he explained that is was a religious symbol, the teacher asked him to wash it off.

“She took me aside and she said, ‘you have to take it off,’” William said. “She gave me a disinfection wipe… and she made me wipe it off.”

The Davis School District is taking the matter seriously and is conducting an investigation.
