Last summer Wesley and Katie Clodfelter were enjoying a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina when they spotted a car pulled over on the side of the road. The couple says they felt compelled to get involved when they saw a man being pulled out of the car in distress and his wife told them he had suffered a heart attack.
Katie is an ER nurse and Wesley does critical care transport there, so they had some knowledge that could help this stranger in his medical emergency. Katie started chest compressions and they did CPR for about 12 to 15 minutes before the ambulance arrived, according to Wesley. Thanks to their life-saving actions, the man lived and now the husband and wife are being honored by the American Red Cross during its annual Salute to Heroes event.
"We were just doing the right thing," Wesley says modestly, adding, "anybody would have done it."
