Part of Utah State Capitol's $250-Million Renovation Failing

Posted May 9th, 2014 @ 11:58am by Talk Radio 105.7 FM / 570 AM

WORK CREWS ARE RIPPING UP FLOORS -- THROUGHOUT THE UTAH STATE CAPITOL, THIS WEEK -- TO FIX FAILED TILE WORK, THAT WAS PUT IN JUST SIX YEARS AGO.

THE FIX IS BEING PAID FOR, WITH A 4.4-MILLION-DOLLAR INSURANCE SETTLEMENT... AND AN ADDITIONAL, UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF MONEY, FROM THE CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES THAT DID THE INSTALLATION.

THE FLOOR WORK, IN 2008, WAS PART OF A QUARTER-BILLION-DOLLAR RESTORATION OF THE CENTURY-OLD BUILDING.

OFFICIALS SAY THE TILE WAS SUPPOSED TO LAST 50 YEARS... BUT THE MORTAR MIX FAILED TO SET.

THE REPLACEMENT -- OF 60-THOUSAND SQUARE FEET OF SMALL TILES -- BEGAN IN MARCH... AND WON'T BE DONE UNTIL THE END OF NEXT YEAR.
