The Draper police officer, 32 year-old Sgt. Derek Johnson was responding to a call Sunday morning near the 13000 block of Fort Street.
Dispatchers received an unintelligible distress call around 6 a.m. from Johnson. Residents in the area also reported hearing shots fired.
Police found Johnson along with a man and woman shot at the scene. Local residents were made to stay inside their homes until it was deemed safe for them to leave later in the day. Sgt. Johnson was airlifted to Intermountain Medical Center where he died from his injuries. The man and woman remain in critical condition.
Police are not looking for a suspect. Detectives believe the man or woman was responsible for the death of Sgt. Derek Johnson.
The area remains a crime scene. Multiple agencies responded to the shooting. The Unified Police Department will be the lead agency conducting the investigation.
Sgt. Derek Johnson is being remembered as a highly decorated and well respected officer. A candlelight vigil will be starting at 8 p.m. this evening at Draper City Hall. The officer leaves behind a wife and extended family.
Motive for the shooting is still not known.
