The U.S. Supreme Court has dealt a blow -- to a Utah company -- in a ruling regarding the patenting of human genes.

The high court has ruled, companies cannot patent genes that naturally exist, in the human body.  However, it left room for synthetically-produced genes to be patented.

The decision strikes down patents previously held by Utah-based Myriad Genetics, for genes linked to breast and ovarian cancer.

The ruling is expected to have big impact on medical and biotechnology industries.
