Salt Lake County D.A. Files Homicide by Assault Charges Against Teen Accused of Punching a Soccer Referee, Causing His Death

Posted May 8th, 2013 @ 12:38pm by Talk Radio 105.7 FM / 570 AM

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill will pursue third degree felony, Homicide by Assault charges, against the 17-year-old boy, accused of punching a soccer referee, last month, causing his death.

Gill will also seek to have the youth certified as an adult.

The charges come on the same day funeral services are held for Ricardo Portillo, 46, who was hospitalized for a week following the incident, in a coma, before dying last weekend.

The alleged assault occurred during a soccer game in Taylorsville, after Portillo made a penalty call against the suspect.
